Translator/ Research Officer

iMMAP is a pioneering humanitarian organisation leading the way forward in the effective use of information management practices and principles at the service of the humanitarian relief and development community. 

scope of work

The Consultant Translator will support the functions of the Research & Analysis Network by providing accurate and complete high quality consecutive and simultaneous interpretation into English from Arabic, or vice versa as and when the need arises. The consultant will perform translation and interpretation services whenever necessary and may perform other related duties as required. Translation of documents will cover a broad range of subjects relating to the humanitarian response and development sectors, looking closely at the Syrian conflict, as dealt with by the iMMAP Research & Analysis Network. The Consultant Translator will be responsible for ensuring that all deadlines are met in a timely manner and the quality of translation is excellent. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English and Arabic are required;
  • Has training of certification as an Interpreter in the required language.
  • Perform interpreting/translation duties for Research & Analysis Network in support of relevant activities.
  • Effectively applies knowledge of relevant languages to deliver accurate translations in accordance with defined requirements.
  • Support research and analysis deliverables (fact checking, verification of sources, quant/qual analysis and writing on ad hoc basis)
  • Maintains confidentiality and discretion in appropriate areas of work.
  • Follow up and verify information when required.
  • Have excellent communication skills to use the appropriate manner in communicating with people.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills (written and spoken).
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports.
  • Proficient in computer applications.
  • Any other duty as might be required by the supervisor and the project coordinator.
 REPRESENTATION 
  • Represent the iMMAP MENA office with national and international partners, donors, and media, and participate in local stakeholder engagement as appropriate;
  • Maintain effective and positive internal contacts with iMMAP country and regional representatives;
  • Follow iMMAP's branding regulations required for marketing or branding of all iMMAP products and correspondence.
  SECURITY 
  • Follow security protocols as laid down by the iMMAP Global Security Advisor and other security iMMAP Advisors.
 ORGANIZATIONAL LEARNING 
  • As part of the iMMAP commitment to organizational learning, and in support of the understanding that learning organizations are more effective, efficient and relevant to the communities they serve, it is expected that he/she will commit 5% of their time to learning activities that benefit iMMAP, as well as individual professional development. 
ACCOUNTABILITY TO BENEFICIARIES

  • iMMAP team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to beneficiaries of iMMAP programs, and to international standards guiding relief and development work, while actively engaging beneficiary communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of field projects.

SUPERVISION

She/he will report directly to the Senior MENA Analyst and work in coordination with and under the indirect supervision of senior colleagues in the Research & Analysis Unit, as well as with iMMAP country, regional and headquarters-based Operations, Administration/Finance and Technical Support units.

WORKING RELATIONS

 Internally, she/he will work closely with the field operations, research and analysis, and project assessment coordination units. Externally, she/he will be expected to liaise with international and Syrian partners, notably IM and program focal points in NGOs, UN agencies and clusters, under the direction of senior colleagues. 

 Qualifications


  • Fluency in written and spoken English required;
  • Fluency in written and spoken Arabic required;
  • Demonstrated experience with translating material from English to Arabic and vice versa is required and experience with translation workflows is desirable.
  • Proven track record as a writer and/or editor is required; excellent editing and proofreading skills in Arabic is required
  • Bachelor’s degree desired;
  • 2-3 years of related work experience, preferably with INGOs. Work in the field of humanitarian information management an asset; but not required;
  • Prior knowledge of the region, especially Syria an asset; but not required
  • Ability to operate in cross-cultural environment and work independently;
  • Takes initiative to go beyond translation/interpretation work to support research and analysis outputs in coordination with and at the direction of analysts in R&A unit and provides research support.
  • Familiarity with the aid system and an understanding of donor requirements and asset, but not required;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Required
  • Knowledge of translation software (including time stamp software) an asset
  • Having an accreditation in listed and any additional languages is an advantage.
  • Consultant must have unrestricted access to work in Jordan.
